Robert Bissell’s rabbit paintings are playful meditations on the inner lives of those creatures and, by extension, of human creatures. Influenced by the surrealism of René Magritte, Bissell mixes scales and uses gigantism with a variety of textures and color palettes.

Bissell grew up on a farm in Somerset, England, and retains his love of animals and rural life. His keen interest in visuals began at an early age as he documented life around him through photographs. After studying graphic design and obtaining a master’s degree from the Royal College of Art in London, he moved to San Francisco and had a successful career in retail advertising before dedicating himself to painting full-time. He lives in Northern California and regularly exhibits in museums and galleries across the United States and Europe.

When Bissell isn’t painting rabbits, he paints a host of other animals—from bears and butterflies to frogs, owls, and elephants—as well as serene, intriguing landscapes. Pomegranate also publishes his work in the book Hero: The Paintings of Robert Bissell.
