The two behemoths of the graphic literature field (yes, I still internally call them "comic books"), DC Comics and Marvel, go back a far ways in the 20th Century. DC (for "Detective Comics") was officially formed in 1937, and Marvel had its modern recognizable founding in 1961. Now they are both entertainment companies deep in all media, and they seem to dominate the film industry. In their core form, however, they are paneled illustrations of a narrative which is sometimes written and sometimes conveyed like a film in angle, pacing, and scripted sound effects. They were born in the funny papers of newspapers (see our Vintage and Independent page), and they are as much wedded to traditional form as anything else. We carry what we try to discern as the best of an enormous field, both classic and new and in-between. Feel free to special order what is not listed here -- just send us an e-mail or call or visit.
