American Roulette Book Launch!

An extended celebration will mark the launch of American Rouletter, a collaborative novel about that ever-relevant and markedly American event, a mass shooting. All the authors will be present!

From 11 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. a book discussion will be held in the upstairs 2nd Floor event space in Molly Pitcher Brewing Company. From 12:30 p.m. - 2 p.m. a Social Hour/Book Buying/Book Signing will be held in the upstairs 2nd Floor event space at Whistlestop Bookshop. Join us!

One unremarkable Friday in April, a stream of ordinary people make their way to Liberty Mall in Anywhere, USA, to shop, work, keep appointments, or catch a movie. A typical day in an average town. American Roulette tells the story of eight of those people.

Emma Franz is a store security guard with a secret. Earl Bricker, a retired factory worker, loves his country, his wife, and his good-old-boy network. Roger Elliot, mid-twenties and miserable, has more than a few axes to grind. High school senior Caitlin Browning, having triumphed over personal challenges, hopes for a quiet evening with her boyfriend. Reverend Chris Deitrich has a special surprise for his weekly Bible study group. Leah McCall, TV personality and teacher, drops by the food court to visit with her best friend. Will Humphreys’ part-time job at the mall offers him little relief from the relentless bullying that plagues his existence.

At 5:17 PM, one of these characters’ actions will change the lives of all the others. Later that night, professional crisis consultant Steven Bradley arrives to help the community deal with the aftermath.

An eclectic group of authors spent six months collaborating on American Roulette, a blockbuster novel full of tension, dread, and anguish. Each author created one of the eight key characters—complete with a supporting cast—who find themselves sharing a common destiny. Readers have but a single day to get to know each of the protagonists before time and circumstances seal their fate.

by the American Roulette Team: Pat LaMarche, Sherry Knowlton, J.M. West, Matthew Best, Phyllis Orenyo, Robert Bradshaw, Andrew Carey, and James Dodds. Foreword by Cheryl Woodruff Brooks. Other contributions by Cheryl Dunn Bychek.

Book Signing with Phuc Tran!

Whistlestop Bookshop is delighted to welcome Phuc Tran back to Carlisle with a book signing on May 4th!

For anyone who has ever felt like they don't belong, Sigh, Gone shares an irreverent, funny, and moving tale of displacement and assimilation woven together with poignant themes from beloved works of classic literature.

In 1975, during the fall of Saigon, Phuc Tran immigrates to America along with his family. By sheer chance they land in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, a small town where the Trans struggle to assimilate into their new life. In this coming-of-age memoir told through the themes of great books such as The MetamorphosisThe Scarlet LetterThe Iliad, and more, Tran navigates the push and pull of finding and accepting himself despite the challenges of immigration, feelings of isolation, and teenage rebellion, all while attempting to meet the rigid expectations set by his immigrant parents.

Appealing to fans of coming-of-age memoirs such as Fresh Off the Boat, Running with Scissors, or tales of assimilation like Viet Thanh Nguyen's The Displaced and The Refugees, Sigh, Gone explores one man’s bewildering experiences of abuse, racism, and tragedy and reveals redemption and connection in books and punk rock. Against the hairspray-and-synthesizer backdrop of the ‘80s, he finds solace and kinship in the wisdom of classic literature, and in the subculture of punk rock, he finds affirmation and echoes of his disaffection. In his journey for self-discovery Tran ultimately finds refuge and inspiration in the art that shapes—and ultimately saves—him.

Come meet the author and get your copy signed at Whistlestop on May 4th!

Book Signing with Matthew Lockwood

Whistlestop will be hosting a book signing for Matthew Lockwood on Saturday, November 23, 2019 from 4:00 to 6:00pm! His new book, To Begin the World Over Again: How the American Revolution Devistated the Globe comes out on October 22nd and is available for preorder through Whistlestop now!

The first exploration of the profound and often catastrophic impact the American Revolution had on the rest of the world

While the American Revolution led to domestic peace and liberty, it ultimately had a catastrophic global impact—it strengthened the British Empire and led to widespread persecution and duress. From the opium wars in China to anti-imperial rebellions in Peru to the colonization of Australia—the inspirational impact the American success had on fringe uprisings was outweighed by the influence it had on the tightening fists of oppressive world powers.

Here Matthew Lockwood presents, in vivid detail, the neglected story of this unintended revolution. It sowed the seeds of collapse for the preeminent empires of the early modern era, setting the stage for the global domination of Britain, Russia, and the United States. Lockwood illuminates the forgotten stories and experiences of the communities and individuals who adapted to this new world in which the global balance of power had been drastically altered.

Matthew Lockwood is assistant professor of history at the University of Alabama and the author of The Conquest of Death: Violence and the Birth of the Modern English State. He is also lucky enough to be married to Lucy Kaufman, daughter of Wendy Moffat of Dickinson College and Donald Kaufman.

Because I Did Not Die: Poems

Cropped Because i did not die1.jpg

"Gutsy, irreverent, and tender, Nicole Santalucia is a poet of risk. In 'Because I Did Not Die,' she peels away the protective layers behind which she could hide, and, instead, shows us the vulnerable person she is. Unflinchingly, she reveals all her flaws and failures, and through these courageous poems we are drawn into the life she has lived populated by the people she has known and loved. This book is filled with unexpected moments of humor and irony interspersed with powerful, heartfelt poems. Santalucia is an amazing poet with an incredibly strong and recognizable voice." -Maria Mazziott i Gillan

Orphan #8 by Kim van Alkemade reading and signing

We are so excited for Kim van Alkemade's return visit to Whistlestop for another reading and signing for those who did not have a chance to come for her initial book launch!

In this stunning new historical novel inspired by true events, Kim van Alkemade tells the fascinating story of a woman who must choose between revenge and mercy when she encounters the doctor who subjected her to dangerous medical experiments in a New York City Jewish orphanage years before.
In 1919, Rachel Rabinowitz is a vivacious four-year-old living with her family in a crowded tenement on New York City’s Lower Eastside. When tragedy strikes, Rachel is separated from her brother Sam and sent to a Jewish orphanage where Dr. Mildred Solomon is conducting medical research. Subjected to X-ray treatments that leave her disfigured, Rachel suffers years of cruel harassment from the other orphans. But when she turns fifteen, she runs away to Colorado hoping to find the brother she lost and discovers a family she never knew she had.
Though Rachel believes she’s shut out her painful childhood memories, years later she is confronted with her dark past when she becomes a nurse at Manhattan’s Old Hebrews Home and her patient is none other than the elderly, cancer-stricken Dr. Solomon. Rachel becomes obsessed with making Dr. Solomon acknowledge, and pay for, her wrongdoing. But each passing hour Rachel spends with the old doctor reveal to Rachel the complexities of her own nature. She realizes that a person’s fate—to be one who inflicts harm or one who heals—is not always set in stone.
Lush in historical detail, rich in atmosphere and based on true events, Orphan #8 is a powerful, affecting novel of the unexpected choices we are compelled to make that can shape our destinies.

Amy June Bates Signing of Ketzel the Cat Who Composed

A kitten’s stroll down a keyboard leads to a celebrated one-minute composition in this charming portrait of a remarkable true friendship.

Moshe Cotel was a composer who lived in a noisy building on a noisy street in a noisy city. But Moshe didn’t mind. Everything he heard was music to his ears. One day, while out for a walk, he heard a small, sad sound that he’d never heard before. It was a tiny kitten! “Come on, little Ketzel,” Moshe said, “I will take you home and we will make beautiful music together.” And they did—in a most surprising way. Inspired by a true story, Lesléa Newman and Amy June Bates craft an engaging tale of a creative man and the beloved cat who brings unexpected sweet notes his way.

Amy June Bates is the illustrator of many wonderful children's books. She is best known for her watercolor and ink illustrations, and her graphic designs have been described as "uncluttered and inviting." She has worked with Harper Collins, Hyperion, Cricket Magazine, Barnes and Noble, and Farrer, Strauss and Giroux, among others. Amy grew up in Utah and graduated in Illustration from Brigham Young University. While in Utah, she worked with the Waterford Institute, where she worked on over twenty early readers. Most importantly, Amy gets to draw, which makes her happy.

How to Articulate and Assess What Success Looks Like
The Social Profit Handbook offers those who lead, govern, and support mission-driven organizations and businesses new ways to assess their impact in order to improve future work rather than merely judge past performance.
For-profit institutions measure their success primarily by monetary gains. But nonprofit institutions are different; they aim for social profit. How do you measure the success of these social profit institutions, where missions are focused on the well-being of people, place, and planet?
Drawing upon decades of leadership in schools and the foundation and nonprofit worlds, author David Grant offers strategies from creating mission time to planning backwards to constructing qualitative assessment rubrics that help organizations take assessment back into their own hands, and improve their work as a result. His insights, illustrated by numerous case studies, make this book a unique organizational development tool for a wide range of nonprofit organizations, as well as emerging mission-based social venture businesses, such as low-profit corporations and B Corps.
The Social Profit Handbook presents assessment and evaluation not as ends in themselves but as the path toward achieving what matters most in the social sector. The result: more benefits to society and stronger, more unified, more effective organizations prepared to make the world a better place

Thomas Glavinic reading and signing

Thomas Glavinic will be presenting and reading from his book Night Work, on Thursday, April 9th in Althouse Hall- Room 106 (the auditorium).

The routine of daily life is such that one goes to sleep with the security that tomorrow will arrive, just as it did today.
Jonas, a young professional in contemporary Vienna, wakes up one morning to discover that he may be the last living being on earth. The highways are empty. The restaurants are empty. The animals have disappeared. The radio only emits white noise and the internet is down. No one answers his phone calls.

"Night Work" is a fast-paced, psychological thriller, exploring the darkness that lies deep within us all. With skilled, efficient prose, ""Glavinic unsettles our notion of the human condition and the artifice of civilization, peeling back the onion to reveal our greatest fears, that no one is in charge and that something unthinkable and unjust is about to occur. "Night Work" is a small gem of a book, unlike any other you've read.

Twig C. George book talk and signing at the Craighead House

Twig George, daughter of Jean Craighead George and author in her own right, will be at the Craighead House tomorrow (Saturday, 10/11) from 1:30-2:30, talking about and signing her books, and Whistlestop Bookshop will be there in support. We'll also have some of Jean's books there. Join us to support the restoration and transformation of the Craighead House!

From Twig's website:  "Twig grew up in a family of naturalists. Her mom, Jean Craighead George, wrote over 100 books about nature and animals for children. When Twig was growing up, her family raised 173 animals in their house, not in a barn, not in cages (mostly). She would wake up in the morning and a crow might be knocking on the window, and often at night there would be a raccoon in her bed! She began writing children's stories when her kids were in elementary school. Twig is currently a lower school librarian at The Park School in Baltimore, MD."
