Revolutionary Road, the Easter Parade, Eleven Kinds of Loneliness
Three works by Richard Yates demonstrate the astounding gifts of a great American master too long neglected. Revolutionary Road is the story of Frank and April Wheeler, an attractive, intelligent young couple whose attempt to get beyond the ordinariness of themselves and their middle-class lives ends in tragedy. In The Easter Parade two sisters, Sarah and Emily Grimes, grow into very different women, the experiences of their childhood predisposing each to an unhappy fate. In the short stories, Eleven Kinds of Loneliness, Yates’s characters encounter discouragement, disillusionment and failure as they struggle to realize their dreams. In all three books the author’s uncompromising vision is matched by the directness of his style. Modern American fiction at its best.
