The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, the Girls of Slender Means, the Driver's Seat, the Only Problem
The brevity of Muriel Spark’s novels is equalled only by the brilliance. This collection of four stories, each a miniature masterpiece, illustrates her development over four decades. The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, adapted as both play and film, explores the perils of hero-worship among girls and their teachers in the 1930s. Salvation is the theme of The Girls of Slender Means, which vividly evokes the life of post-war London between the surrender of Germany and that of Japan. The Driver’s Seat, made into a film starring Elizabeth Taylor, charts the heroine’s descent into madness. The Only Problem is a parable of suffering which brings the Book of Job to bear on late twentieth-century terrorism. Despite the high seriousness of their themes, all four are fantastic comedies of manners, wittily crystallizing eras and their predicaments into a few pages.
